In 1843 Rev. C. L. Reay - the first Anglican clergyman in Nelson was offered land by Rev. C. W. Saxton, a settler, for building a church. This was described in 1845 as Section 127, Waimea West.

However, later on the land deeds it is described as Part Section 124 Waimea West and measures 1 acre and 7 perches. By Deed of Conveyance number 3440 it is described "as a site for the erection of a church for the celebration of Divine Service according to the rites of the United Church of England and Ireland " and passed by deed of conveyance dated 10 December 1861 from Francis Horniblow Blundell to T. A. Bowden, F. H. Blundell, J. W. Bamicoat, E. Baigent and J. Saxon, Trustees and then by deed of conveyance dated 27 March 1918 the executors of T. A. Bowden to the Nelson Diocesan Trust Board.
